Honor.
Me and my brothers recently did a "The Avatar: The Last Airbender" marathon
and it was one of the awesome animation series that I've watched.
One of the characters that I "almost" totally dislike was Zuko.
He's the so confused guy who in spite of the guidance of his good uncle
manage to make bad decisions along the way.
But one of the things that I noticed about him was the drive
that he has in regaining his honor from his father by capturing the avatar.
Honor. What is honor?
Most filipinos are not quite familiar of the word honor. (as far as I know)
I remember the first time I heard it was in a filipino comedy movie in the 90's
where the attorney addresses the judge as "your honor", but I'm not pretty sure what it really means at that time. We filipinos usually shout "freedom" (kalayaan) or "justice" (katarungan) but we seldom use the word "honor" (karangalan) and cry out for it at the same level.
Honor means (noun) high respect; esteem or (verb) regard with great respect,
It has something to do with a person we're looking up to or someone who inspires us, who at times we want to imitate as well. Who we want to be or how we should be treated. Someone who did something so awesome, gaining a high respect from others you wish it could have been you.
So others buy jerseys of their favorite basketball players, others imitate the styles of their favorite celebrities and others get and read the books of what their favorite writers read and write. When you honor someone, you are allowing that person
to influence you in that area that you are honoring him/her, or at least be inspired of what he/she is or is doing. In short, we could say honoring someone/something affects and influence you on how you should live.
Zuko thought at first that obeying his father and being his successor will regain his honor . But later after achieving it made him even more confused than before of what he should do.
In the end it was through the teachings of his Uncle made him regain his "true honor" in his heart. He was one of the people who saved the world from being destroyed by the fire nation in the story. He has regained his honor by honoring his Uncle.
Accept it or not, we are honoring someone/something in our lives and we are allowing that to influence and affect us even if we are not aware of it.
Identify, and choose wisely to whom/what
will you get your honor from and give your honor to.
As for me, I choose to honor the infinite, immense, just, merciful,
omnipresent, immanent, holy and perfect God that is found in Christ Jesus.
The question now is, Who do you honor? And where do you get your honor from?
